Augmented Reality Mural

The brief

THE CHALLENGE
Create a unique and interactive mural highlighting an aspect of the local area. Should create an opportunity to engage tourists and promote the local area through social media.

TARGET AUDIENCE
Tourists to the area of any age.

  • Tasked with creating a fun and unique interactive mural, I started by researching how other murals in popular locations created interactive experiences. Popular concepts include wings, balloons, bicycles or other elements included on the mural for people to pose with. I wanted to create a mural that went beyond these traditional visuals and was truly interactive.

    The idea of create a traditional mural that could be enhanced through augmented reality started to take shape.

    I researched ways at augmented reality could be created. After review many programs and hosting platforms. I landed on using Adobe Aero. Adobe has created an augmented reality program that is easy to use, included in their creative cloud subscription, and can be updated manipulate on location and from mobile devices.

    After providing a proof of concept to the client and getting approval to move forward, I began conceptualizing the artwork for the mural.

Initial concept for the Augmented Reality Portion of the mural. Using the tools inside Adobe Aero I was able to create a simple AR experience.

  • For the design, I wanted something fun and exciting that went beyond the traditional imagery of the beach. Through sketching and research I landed on a more surreal and vibrant representation of the beach that would standout to visitors.
